Bring the Family to South Beach
When it comes to vacationing in Florida, prevailing wisdom has long held that South Beach is for sexy singles, families go to Disney, and that's just the way things are.
But are they?
Miami and "family friendly" might seem a curious coupling at first, but a quick peek behind the curtain of glitz and glamour reveals a delightfully kid-appropriate town.

Kids love sand, and Miami has no shortage of it. While some areas of South Beach are more geared toward adult visitors, there are plenty of other beaches around Miami that are perfect for family outings. Matheson Hammock Park Beach boasts a calm lagoon and plenty of space for picnics; Crandon Park Beach in Key Biscayne offers a carousel and playgrounds.
Jungle Island: Founded as "Parrot Jungle" in the 1936, this zoological theme park has been in its current location on Watson Island since 2003. Jungle Island features a 90-minute guided safari tour, as well as the "Lemur Experience", where kids can get up close and personal with the park's boisterous (but harmless) lemur population. Jungle Island is open every day, including holidays; special events and shows are posted on the park's website.
You and your older children can swim with dolphins at the country's longest-operating marine mammal park. If you prefer to stay dry, try the famous killer whale show, featuring Lolita the Orca (just don't sit too close). Little ones will be enthralled by the Seaquarium's guided presentations on manatees, alligators, sea lions and sharks.
: This famous promenade is one of South Beach's biggest tourist attractions. There's a massive three-story movie theater here, as well as shopping and restaurants. Children will delight at the many street performers, and parents can rest a little easier knowing that there are no cars for their kids to dodge (Lincoln Road is vehicle-free).
This interactive museum has something for children of all ages: a planetarium, a wildlife center, interactive exhibits and even health screening events. Younger kids are welcome to take part in the MiaSci MiniCamps – one-day educational camps with themes ranging from engineering to ecosystems.
Eager to get out on the water and try your hand at a bit of sport fishing? Miami offers dozens of fishing charter services, many of which cater to younger passengers. When choosing a charter company, make sure to ask if they have appropriately sized safety equipment for little ones.
Step into a tropical paradise with over 700 acres of wildlife and a special "Children's Zoo" where children can interactive with wildlife. Giggle at the meerkat feedings, ride the wildlife carousel, and treat your more adventurous kids to a camel ride.
Nearly every restaurant in South Beach offers al fresco dining. Enjoy a family dinner as you watch the sun set and take a vote on tomorrow's activities. If you're able to find a babysitter, check out one of South Beach's trendy-chic spots, including the Delano (with its famous infinity pool), Shore Club, and the Setai.
